Backup Capacity Planner

As with anything done in a form versus reality, "actual mileage may vary." However, we're trying pretty hard to come as close as possible in helping you plan the backup location capacity you need.

Capacity calculated by drive size
List the total number of GB on all of the volumes you are planning on backing up (not the used space, you want the total space).
If using Retrospect or other backup software that supports single occurance backups, estimate the amount of redundant information (such as multiple copies of the same operating system, applications, fonts, etc.). Normal networks have around 60% redundancy. Single systems have very little.
If you are using compressed disk space or tape-based compression, estimate the compression rate on the backup destination files or tape. While text files compress well, and application files don't compress very well, fonts don't compress at all. Average compression on a network-based backup is around 30%. Average compression for a single database server where the database data takes up the most significant room is more around the 40% mark.
These amounts will be multiplied by 3 (to cover incremental changes during the week) to get the total required capacity.
Required GBs of backup capacity

There are other ways to calculate capacity as well. When you are planning backup capacity for computers that are very document centric (like file servers or database servers) then the most accurate way to get a handle on how much space you need is to measure how many documents you have, and how many of them have changed in the last 30 days. Each time a document changes, it will need to be backed up. For example, if you have 3 documents at 10 MB each, and 1 of them changes each time you back up, your first backup will take 30 MB and then your second will add another 10 MB for that changed file.

This isn't an impossible task at all. There is a product called LANsurveyor that will take this measurement for you and provide you with the results. We cover it in great depth within the book. LANSurveyor is made by Neon Software.
