High Profile Data Losses Illustrate Need for Data Security A recent round of high-profile data mismanagement stories have captured headlines in IT circles over the last few months.

On May 1st, Time Warner announced the loss of up to 600,000 computer records pertaining to current and former employees. The records were housed on traditional backup tapes, and were apparently misplaced while in transit to a storage facility.
No further details were immediately available on exactly how the tapes were misplaced, or whether foul play was suspected. In February, Bank of America said it had notified federal investigators that backup tapes containing credit card records of U.S. senators and more than a million federal government employees were lost.
This data loss event affected more than a third of the Pentagon's staff.
That same month, ChoicePoint Inc., a provider of identity verification services, said data thieves gained access to a customer database of 145,000 profiles that included, among other items, Social Security numbers and credit reports. The company took a pre-tax charge of $5.4 million to cover expenses related to the investigation.

Data broker LexisNexis reported in April that identity thieves had gained access to 310,000 U.S. account holders' Social Security numbers, names, addresses and driver's license numbers in dozens of break-in attempts over a two-year span.
