Common Backup Terms Explained
Question:
What is MPEG?
Answer: The term used for digital video compression standards and file
formats developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group. Files in MPEG format
generally produce better-quality video than other similar file formats. MPEG
files have a high compression rate because they store only the changes from one
frame to another, instead of each frame. Some data is removed, but the data that
is lost is usually imperceptible to the human eye. The video information is
encoded using a technique called DCT. MPEG files can be decoded with software or
special hardware. The three major MPEG standards are MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4.
